Skincare Tips & Tricks for Beginners (Part 2)

For those of you who have read the part 1 to this series, you know I’m a skincare-olic. I love skincare but I wasn’t very knowledgeable in it. I pick up most of the tips along the (hard) way and as much as I would like to say “I don’t regret anything”, the truth is I wish someone would’ve just told me about them sooner.

I don’t want you to miss out or breakout like I did, so I’m hoping I can be that person for you. Here are the things I wish I knew when I first started my skincare journey!

1. Get Your Free Gifts

Yes. The one thing I love more than products on sale, is products for free (don’t lie, you do too!) Quite often, stores offer membership programs that may give away free products during the year. For example, Sephora gives you a free birthday gift every year, and Rocky Mountain Soap Company gives away free natural products every several months. Take a few minutes to look up what stores in your city offer good membership perks. It’s worth your time.

2. Have Your BF Get His Free Gifts (…and Then Take It)

If your boyfriend or girlfriend is into skincare, then tell them to sign up too. If they are NOT into skincare, then that’s even better. Get them to sign up still, and then take their free gifts for yourself hahah. My BF is a Sephora Beauty Insider, and we make the trip to Sephora on his birthday every year to pick up his gift…for me.

3. Don’t Cleanse in a Hot Shower

I’ve tried every possible lazy method to skincare, because I’m just a really lazy person. But I wish I knew about this sooner. It may be convenient to cleanse your face in the hot shower, but it’s not recommended.

According to self.com, “hot, steamy showers can cause dilation of blood vessels and breakage of delicate tissue”. Marie Claire also shares that hot temperatures will dilate capillaries and can cause redness in skin and aggravate conditions like rosacea. On top, hot water can strip away the necessary oil barrier and dry out your skin. That being said, if your shower is not too hot, maybe it’ll be okay? I’m not sure. But I am avoiding cleansing in showers in general for now until I know better.

4. Do Skincare From the Inside Too

There’s a period where I was very frustrated with my skincare. I was sticking to my routine, and I was using great products, why is my skin still so bad?! Discouraged couldn’t even describe how I was feeling. Then it dawned on me…well I have the worst diet ever so what do I expect.

It doesn’t matter what you put on your face, if the inside constantly needs healing from a lack of vitamins, it will reflect on your skin. I don’t have the healthiest diet, but I do have my glow-up smoothie that I drink regularly. It’s full of nutrients and it’s delicious. Try it!

5. Remember Your Neck

Y’all, I wish someone reminded me of that. I was so focused on my face, I forgot about my neck. And when I do remember my neck, I still chose not to care for it because I want to “save” the products for my face. Oh man, what a mistake.

Our necks are susceptible to wrinkles because it is exposed to constant movement and UV rays, according to The Zoe Report. It is also more prone to sun damage and takes a longer time to repair. I am in my 20s and I have neck lines. I didn’t care for my neck, and it shows. Don’t be like me.

6. Don’t Use Expired Products

Sounds obvious right? Why is this even a tip? But you may be surprised how many people actually do this. Or maybe you won’t, because you are one of them.

I was one of them.

For whatever reason I thought I knew better than the product designers and the written instructions. If it’s just a few months over, I’m sure it’s still fine. But there is a reason why an expiry date exist. Debra Jailman, a dermatologist, shared with The Dermstore Blog that “the main problem with old products is that they can decompose. The chemicals can separate and cause problems with the skin. I have seen burns and irritation from old products. They can also harbor bacteria and cause a skin infection or even worse: they can have viruses and cause a herpes outbreak,”

Yeeks. I don’t want that. So do the opposite of what Nike would say – just don’t do it.

That’s It…For Now

There will be a part 3 to this series, because there are just so many things to talk about for skincare. I hope you guys are enjoying these tips and are finding them helpful. If you have your own tricks, please share with everyone in the comments below, would love to know it!

  1. Skincare from the inside is so important! A lot of skin problems occur because of our diets. I had a major problem with eczema until I stopped eating dairy and now my skin is so much better.

    1. Hahahaha i know exactly what you mean!! I’m the same!!! Those are too expensive to put on the neck 😭 But if you ignore it and neck lines start showing up…it’ll be too late, they’re obvious 😭 Now I use the cheaper products on my neck, and save the luxury ones for my face so it hurts my wallet less hahah

  2. Loved this post so much! I’m going to check out your first one right now! I definitely agree that skin care is related to your diet – ever since I changed my eating habits my skin has gotten noticeably clearer (by the way that smoothie looks delicious I’m stealing your recipe 😁) Also, I didn’t know that about cleansing in a hot shower … oops. Thanks so much for the tips – looking forward to the next edition 😊

    1. Awww thank you thank you 💛 Yeahh I’m the same! I try to eat less sugar and now my face is clearer. What did you change in your diet?? Hahah yes please steal the recipe! The smoothie is my current favourite drink. And yeah, the hot shower one I only discovered recently too 😓 Was always wondering why my skin is so dry after shower hahah

      1. Well I shifted to a more natural diet and cut out quite a lot of complex carbs. I still enjoy dessert and ‘junk’ every now and then but it’s not as much of a constant in my diet anymore and my skin has cleared up quite a bit. Yayy definitely stealing it 😁 that’s such an interesting fact😔 now that you mention it my skin does feel drier so thanks for the save 😇

  3. I love the second tip! Hahaha But the fourth one is my favorite. It is really important that we’re aware of the foods we consume and not just rely on skincare products. What we consume radiates on the outside.

    1. Hahahah right?! The second tip is the best 😂 Yeah so true. Skincare can only do so much for our face if the inside is a complete mess. At some point I felt like I was burning money, cause I was eating bad processed food daily but still using fancy products.
