A City Girl’s Summer Bucket List

Toronto has been above 30 degrees for the past several days. I can barely see when I’m outside because my eyes are always squinting from the sun. Do you know what that means?

It’s sunscreen season baby! (and also Kae please remember to bring your sunglasses next time)

Although summer this time around is much different than what we’ve ever experienced, this is not going to stop us from enjoying the sun and water. Yes, travel plans may have been pushed back and summer goals may need to be changed, but that’s okay! Making do with what we have can be just as awesome as long as we plan well. So I decided to make a list of all the things I wanna do given the half-lockdown situation in the world right now. Here is my summer bucket list for 2020!

1. Go on a Roadtrip

Since we are still in semi-lockdown, I’ll have to fill my wanderlust in another way. So exploring locally in Ontario is going to be a big theme for me this summer. I did a quick search and discovered that there are many natural wonders just several hours away from Toronto. Although it’s a bit far, as long as we pack enough snacks and have a hype playlist for the car ride, I think it’ll be fun!

2. Have a Cute Picnic

That’s right, it’s gotta be cute (LOL). Mostly because I rarely do picnics, and the last time I had one turned out kinda messy. I’ve learned my lesson, so this time I’m gonna be more prepared. I recently got a picnic blanket from Indigo and I’ve planned out what food to get depending on our cravings that day. So I’m basically ready……right?

3. Go on a Hike

I’m a very active gal. I may not love going to the gym, but I do love moving my body. Maybe because I grew up doing many athletic activities like dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, badminton, swimming, and band (I have to throw band in there hahah, shoutout to my flute players). Ever since I climbed the Wayna Picchu in Peru and almost died (no lie…), I fell in love with hiking, especially the tough ones. It pushes my body and challenges my mind all while being in nature, what’s better than that?

That being said, I haven’t hiked too many places yet and I don’t know how many good ones Ontario has. So if you know any good ones, please let me know in the comments below!

If you haven’t read my post about how solo travelling has changed my life, here’s a photo from my Wayna Picchu hike:

4. Visit a Cave

I have a thing for caves LOL. I find them mysterious and intriguing. I visit caves only when I’m travelling to another country though, because it didn’t occur to me that Ontario might have caves to explore too, silly me. A while back I came across two beautiful caves in Ontario, thanks to Narcity. One in 3 hours away, and the other is 5 hours. Hopefully they’ll reopen from the lockdown soon before the summer ends!

5. Be Tech-Free for a Day

This one will be very hard, and I don’t know why I would do this to myself. But I’m up for the challenge. Ever since my 30-day Instagram Detox, I’ve wondered to the extreme. What will happen if I go tech-free entirely for a day? Probably either go insane or feel better than ever. But who knows?! I hate that this thought came through, but now I am curious hahah…

6. Pick Up a New Hairstyle

I am not very feminine when it comes to makeup and hair. I only know how to do one makeup look, which is just eyeliner, mascara, cc cream, and sometimes brow pencil if I’m feeling fancy. Same with my hair. I either leave it down or up in a ponytail. However, I’m proud to say that last year I forced myself to learn how to double braids, so maybe this year I’ll learn how to do a single braid ponytail! I’m going to make it a thing that every summer I’ll learn to do a new hairstyle.

7. Go Kayaking or Paddle Boarding

I LOVE the water. I like how calming it looks and how relaxing it sounds. It’s meditative. In fact, I usually find a spot in the middle of the lake, and literally do meditation on the kayak (or paddle board). I highly recommend trying that! Every year I try to do some water activity at least once. This year will be no different.

8. Bike Along the Lake

Yessss. My perfect summer will be full of exercises and activities, because I can’t do any of these during the winter, especially in Toronto (it gets SO cold out here y’all…). I want to bike along the lake because by now you know, I love moving my body and I love the water. And more importantly, you get a nice breeze when you’re by the lake. So this is perfect!

9. Make a New Summer Drink

For those of you who’ve read my previous posts, you know I have a glow-up smoothie I drink almost every day. Many of you have shared your smoothie recipe with me (thank you!) so I’ll be trying them this summer. I’m hoping that at least one of them will become my regular drink, because right now I only have one that I love, and I’ll need to switch things up soon before I get bored of it.

That’s It!

Here’s my bucket list for this summer! How about you? Do you have anything you want to do this summer? Please share them in the comments below, I’d love to know and possibly add them to my list!

  1. I do hope you can go on your roadtrip! I have plans to do one this fall, but because of COVID-19 cases spiking again in the US, I’m uncertain if the trip will still happen. Hope it works out for you!

    1. Thank you I hope so too! Ontario should be okay…thankfully the number of new cases are slowly declining. Oh man US is tricky…seeing the numbers on the news is quite unsettling. Hope US gets better soon, and hope your plan will go through!

  2. Going tech-free is such a great idea! A day may be short but I seriously encourage you (as a total stranger) to do it. Be in the most positive mindset you can be and you’ll see you’ll love it. Perhaps you might even make it a habit, or something you do from time to time. Take this time for yourself and just relax πŸ˜‰ Great post by the way, all your ideas together will make an enriching summer

    1. Yeahh I like the idea, but it also scares me hahah. I will definitely be giving this a shot though, so thank you for the tips! I will be trying my best to be more positive and less anxious πŸ˜‚ And yesss I’m hoping I can turn this into a regular thing, like a “reset day” every few months. Thank you πŸ’›!!

  3. 1, 3, and 5, I would love. I have done #5 many times before and it’s a good feeling depending on where you are in life. Sometimes it’s just freeing to switch off and enjoy your surrounding.

  4. Go kayaking!! Although I prefer waist-deep waters only though because I can’t swim! πŸ˜… Also, wish I could bike too, do you think it’s too late for me to learn? P.S. I specially suck in balancing myself. πŸ˜”πŸ˜‚ Awesome list, I think I’ll go with picking up a new hairstyle for now, maybe a color change! ❀️

    1. Hahahah aww, life vest can help! Oh no definitely not too late to learn. Maybe try those 2 people bike to start? I think biking is kinda like snowboarding, the more fearless you are, the faster you will pick it up 🚴 Wuuu colour change is such a great idea, that’d be exciting πŸ˜ƒ

      1. Oof, if confidence is the key, I might never learn it at all! πŸ˜… Yes, hope I can go out soon to have my hair done, I’m excited 😍

  5. These are such great choices I love your list!! Definitely agree with the cute picnic idea – they’re always such fun in the warm weather! I’m currently in winter so dreaming of warmer weather (I’m so jealous of you right now) but one thing I’d love to do that isn’t on your list is probably kayaking and also going to the farmer’s market. I’d also love to go out and pick fresh fruit – I know it sounds weird but it sounds like such a fun activity! Hope you have an awesome summer and can’t wait to read your next post xx πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you πŸ’›!! Oh you’re in winter right now? Where are you located?

Wuuuu farmer’s market, that’s a good one!! Going fruit picking isn’t weird! My parents do this every year as their little dates, whether if it’s just going to a market to pick fruits, or actually going to a farm to pick it off the trees hahaha (in fact they actually just went cherry picking this morning). They love it! Hope summer comes soon for you hahah πŸ˜ƒπŸ’›

      1. Yeah I’m in winter – I live in South Africa 😁

Oooh that sounds like so much fun. Honestly it just sounds like such a relaxing activity that gets you out in nature and is super peaceful and you get to eat fruit – how can that not be a good activity??☺️

Haha sadly I’m going to miss summer this year since I’m starting uni in England in September so double winder for me 😭 oh well I guess that just means I’ll appreciate it more when it finally comes! What’s your favourite winter activity?? πŸ’•β˜ΊοΈ

      2. Ohhh South Africa that’s awesome! I’ve always wanted to visit, it’s on my bucket list πŸ˜ƒ

Haha agreed 100%. Fruit picking sounds awesome πŸ’› Oh nooo that sucks. Starting uni is exciting though! And scary hahah but it’ll be fun!

I’m actually not really a winter girl…especially in Toronto…it’s wayyy too cold πŸ˜… So I usually do more indoor stuff in winter. How about you??

      3. Oh that’s so cool! I hope one day you get to come visit (if you ever do let me know maybe I can show you around πŸ˜‰)

Yeahhh but as you said it comes with the super exciting part of starting uni. I’m really nervous but also can’t wait so anxious-excited pretty much sums it up πŸ˜‚. Are you at Uni?

Ohh wow yeah I’m sure you get way more intense winters than the ones I know πŸ˜‚ I completely agree with you spending time cosy and warm indoors is the best way to spend winter. It really depends for me in SA it’s still sunny and blue-skied but I also usually stick to indoor activities like reading and drinking way too much tea. If I’m in a place where it snows though I like to sometimes just walk around because I find snow pretty πŸ˜… By the way are you a tea or coffee (or hot chocolate) drinker??

        Liked by 2 people

      4. Ohhhh I would love that! But probably won’t be travelling anytime soon 😞

I am in uni right now, but this is actually for my 2nd undergrad degree. I did marketing for my first one, and now I’m doing psychology πŸ˜ƒ I’m crazy I know haha but I love learning. Don’t know if you guys have orientation and club week, but you do, I highly recommend going to those! I met most of my uni friends during orientation week and joining clubs!

Sunny and blue-sky in the winter sounds AMAZING, I am very jealous 😭 Snow is pretty yeahhh, until it turns into a snow storm LOL If you’re into physical activities then snowboarding and skiiing would be fun. And oh yes!! Hot tea in the winter is the best πŸ΅πŸ’• I am actually an everything drinker. I rotate between coffee and tea, and sometimes hot choco and smoothie πŸ˜ƒ I love sipping on something while doing stuff.

      5. I know it’s so depressing πŸ˜” at least we can dream though?

Oh wow that’s super impressive damn and here I am waiting to start my first undergrad πŸ˜‚ those are such interesting subjects you’re definitely not crazy and I’m sure they’d actually complement each other well! We will we have β€˜freshers’ week and then all the club/activities fairs so definitely planning on heading there – thanks for the tip! 😊

Haha don’t be jealous it’s still pretty chilly πŸ˜‚ I love snow … thankfully never been in a snowstorm but have seen them and they do look terrifying … you’re so right it isπŸ’– Oh that’s cool😁 having something to sip is so satisfying while working but I’m not a coffee drinker so it’s usually tea, water or a smoothie and if I’m feeling naughty then a hot chocolate πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Š

      6. Yeah…the dreaming is keeping me motivated. Been updating and adding new things to my travel list during covid πŸ˜‚

Hahahah you still have years of time if you ever wanna do a 2nd or 3rd degree πŸ˜‚ What program are you doing for your undergrad?

Those are all great drink choices! For me is if I’m feeling Christmasy, then hot chocolate hahah πŸŽ…β˜•

      7. Haha me too πŸ˜‚

I knowwπŸ˜‚ I’m going to be doing a BA Honours in Education Studies πŸ˜‡

Haha I agree hot chocolate is quite a christmassy drink ☺️ for me my christmassy drink is a chai latte – the spices and taste just make me so so happy and give me the festive feelings πŸ˜‚

  6. I love this list so much! Meditating while on the kayak in the middle of the lake sounds interesting! I’ve always meditated on the sound of nature, and it’s relaxing! What more if I am there? But I’ve never experienced kayaking πŸ˜….

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Glad you liked this list! Take some ideas for yourself πŸ˜ƒ Yeahhh, meditating in the middle of the lake is probably one of the most calming experiences ever 😌 Highly recommend! Ohhh, then I think this year should be the year for you to try kayaking hahah

      1. Yes! Haha I’ve been looking for places near me, and I’ve been watching videos. It looks easy, but I’m a bit scared if I didn’t balance it well. I’m still a beginner in swimming. πŸ˜…

  7. Hey it’s an amazing post. Great choices girl. I love road trips but due to Covid , it’s not allowed to travel far away . I wish you can complete you summer bucket list and travel to Ontario . Going tech free for a day is also a great idea.

  8. Awesome list. I hope you are able to tick all of them for the summer despite the pandemic. Maybe the simple ones can happen very fast, like learning about the new hairstyle or doing a nice drink. All the best for your summer!
