Best Netflix Series to Watch During the COVID-19 Lockdown

Ever since the lockdown started, my boyfriend and I have developed a routine. Every night at 10pm, we watch 2 episodes of a Netflix show together (virtually). This has quickly become my favourite part of the day for obvious reasons. I’m pretty happy I was able to binge through shows after shows without having to sacrifice my time during the day.

From American reality shows to Korean dramas, I’ve watched quite a few. Here are my favourite Netflix series of all the ones I’ve watched in the past 2 months! (*They are not ranked in order, and there are no spoilers)

1. Itaewon Class

I was never a K-drama kinda girl, but Itaewon Class was highly recommended by many of my friends so I gave it a shot. And thank goodness I did. This show is amazing y’all.

Itaewon Class is about a (very handsome) ex-convict trying to make his ambitious, revengeful dream turn into a reality. Something happened in the past and has turned his life upside down. This show focuses on his journey on fighting through that and the people he meets along the way. Handsome, you ask? Trust me, the bowl cut look will grow on you.

The show is full of emotions, plot twists, and good acting. You become invested in their lives and relationships because the character developments are so well done. Netflix better releases a Season 2 for Itaewon Class!

2. Tiger King

How can we talk about Netflix in 2020 and not mention Tiger King. We just can’t. This meme sums it all up.

I am a sucker for real stories so when Netflix recommended this to me, I listened. Little did I know what I was really in for. This indeed is a very interesting show, in the weirdest way possible.

Tiger King is a docuseries about the bizarre world of the big cat community. Just when you think things can’t get stranger, it gets stranger.

Although I was definitely entertained by all the ridiculous things that happened on the show, I didn’t love it as much as the hype did. I actually enjoyed the memes and inside jokes that came out of it more than the actual series.

Rating: 3.5/5 – good but not amazing.

3. Kingdom

I first became interested in Kingdom because I loved the movie “Train to Busan”. And given how much I’ve also loved Itaewon Class, I decided to give another K-drama a watch. This is one of the best decisions I’ve made this year you guys.

Kingdom is about a mysterious plague that has started to spread across the country. The prince now has to fight against the new breed of enemies while trying to unveil the evil scheme behind it all and the puzzling health condition of the King.

The show is full of suspense. It has just enough horror to make it thrilling, but not too much that it becomes terrifying and I have to hide behind a pillow. The story-line was well written, and the acting was believable. It was packed with actions, and all pieces tie in nicely.

Rating: 4.5/5 – highly recommend!

4. Ainori Love Wagon: African Journey

If I get to be on a reality show once in my life, I will choose Ainori Love Wagon in a heartbeat.

This Japanese reality show takes 7 strangers on a road trip across the country, in a pink minibus. This is not just a trip to explore but is a journey in search of love. Their goal is to return to Japan as couples. The show initially debuted in 1999, but ended in 2009. Here and there, the show was revived but did not last long. In 2017 Netflix brought Ainori back to life.

The show is extremely wholesome. Beyond the adorable interactions between the members, the trip does not have typical tourist itineraries. It takes the members to the deep-end of the cities’ history, culture and social issues under an authentic lens. The commentators often shed tears from learning about the dark, unspoken truth of some cities. What makes the show even better are the hilarious commentaries and editing.

Although this show isn’t filled with crazy dramas so some might find it dull, it did make my heart goes all sorts of direction when watching it.

5. Rupaul’s Drag Race: Season 11

Rupaul’s Drag Race is a reality competition for some of the world’s most famous drag queens. Every week there’s a new challenge. It ranges from comedy and acting to singing and dancing. The two queens who do the worst will have to lip-sync for their lives, and whoever loses gets eliminated.

Other than the dramas, the show has empowering moments. Rupaul drops nuggets of wisdom on the contestants from time to time.

Although Season 5 and 6 are still my favourite by far, this season was entertaining as per usual and gave me good laughs. This season has multiple big personalities, and queens were talented.

6. Next in Fashion

I was surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed watching this one. I love clothes, but when given the option, fashion competitions would not be my first pick, or second. But Netflix knows me better than I know myself. Netflix recommended it to me “because I watched ‘Queer Eye'”, and I’m glad it did.

Next in Fashion is a reality competition where the designers are given a theme to create a visionary look every week. They have to come up with the idea, pick out fabrics, build the outfits, and fit it on models for the runway. The designer with the worst runway look that week is eliminated.

Seeing the creativity and confidence the designers have in their visions is so remarkable. I have a newfound appreciation for fashion and designers.
